How to Commission Art Work
by Annie Margarita
Getting the Quote
After a review of the above information, the artist will submit a quote for the final painting. Certain aspects of the piece should be annotated on the quote such as size, medium, subject matter, deadline and price. A quick sketch is done for mural commissions on the site, so that the owner gets a general idea of the composition. Rough sketches can be done for fine art also. Indicate to the artist if you would like one. Samples of finishes are taken to the site to determine what style you would like. There is usually a small fee for creation of new samples in the colors and finishes that you require. This should be discussed with the artist beforehand.
Acceptance of the Quote and Payment
After reviewing the artist’s proposal, make corrections if necessary. The artist will ask you to sign the proposal to accept the contract. A down payment will be paid, usually 50% for art work and smaller murals. Larger projects may have a price plan divided up into thirds. At this time, the artist will indicate where on the calendar they will start your art work and how long it should take to complete. Art work is not an exact science, so some pieces may take longer for the artist to finish so that they can give you a quality piece that you are both happy with. If a portrait or specific subject matter is commissioned, the artist will need photographs at this time. Old and grainy photos are very difficult to work with, artists may ask for a sitting to be done or to personally photograph the subject, so they have what they need to paint your commission.
Completed Artwork and Final Payment
At the indication of the artist, murals on site or by a photograph of the completed fine art piece, the artist will ask for final approval of the artwork. At this time, you the client should indicate what you would like changed in the artwork. After changes have been made, final payment is due. When the artist has received payment, the fine art piece will be delivered by hand or by insured shipment. Commissioned works are generally not returnable, so it is important to note what changes you would like done before shipment.
